The paradox of autism; strengths and weaknesses in sensation, cognition and the brain – 14 Maggio 2018
Chris Ashwin, Dept. of Psychology, University of Bath; Visiting Researcher, Autism Research Centre (ARC), University of Cambridge, Dept. of Psychiatry
Autism spectrum conditions (ASC) are characterised by difficulties in social communication and reciprocity alongside restricted interests and repetitive behaviour. However, theoretical understanding about how all these different traits relate to each other has been limited. I will highlight some recent research in ASC showing strengths and weaknesses in processing of social information such as eye gaze processing, and also strengths and weaknesses in processing non-social information such as reasoning. I will also present some theoretical ideas that might help understand the paradoxical pattern of processing seen in ASC.
